Fedora 6 was supposed to be released today (tuesday) but has been pushed back again – https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2006-October/msg00431.html – due to various issues (Note for people reading the link above and wondering about some of the cryptic lingo: “tracebacks in things like anaconda” means *the installer crashes* (!!) ).

A new release candidate is mentioned, that is supposed to be used for testing the latest rawhide (development tree) two days (!!) before the (new) release date – but haven’t found any mention of where that can be downloaded. So who is supposed to be testing this non-public RC and how can they possibly expect to have a stable release with a crashing installer on the last public (sort-a) RC and two days of testing with a not really public RC ?!?

And I still would like to rant about the advertised-as-included-but-not-really-there desktop effects, which while the release notes said they’re in by default, I found no hint of them anywhere and on my rawhide machine, once enabled X promptly crashes. I can’t help but compare this to the latest Mandriva 2007, which on the first boot asks you if you want your 3D desktop to use XGL or AIGLX (with the choice that you can’t make because you don’t have the correct drivers nicely grayed out) and then everything just works.

I’m not the one to throw mud around, but I get the feeling that the Fedora devels are a bunch of yahoos.
