Second thought – I just tried to enable “Desktop Effects” again on my rawhide machine and it works. With the open source ATI driver its evern reasonably fast (much better then KDE’s composing manager over Xrender anyway). If I try to twist the cube a few times with several windows and something that does heavy processing in the background (like yum 🙁 ) then I can see some stuter, but the rest is ok. But Mandriva still is better – although enabling compiz was as easy as System->Preferences->Desktop Effects->Enable, the compiz setting manager, gset-compiz, is no where to be found and without it I have no idea how to map the keyboard shortcut for the scale – “expose”-like feature which I really like and somehow is unmapped in the current compiz setting.
