As long as we are on the subject of poor English, I happen to find a Chinese manufactured webcam, with the accompanied manual, and couldn’t help myself but to share with my readers some of its pearls of wisdom:

While working on a product I’m involved with, I came across these two guys who posted a few videos for 5min.com, about playing chess. Its cool – they demonstrate how to do simple moves in chess, and why these moves work – in incredibly Russian accented badly spoken English (well – they’re not as bad as Chinese, but are more funny 😉 ).

מדי פעם אנחנו שומעים כל עוד חוק שמאפשר לרשויות השלטון במדינה מסוימת חדירה מוגזמת לפרטיות אזרחיהן – פעם בארה”ב, פעם בבריטניה או בצרפת, ועכשיו – גם בישראל.

למי שלא עוקב, ממשלת ישראל דנה בימים אלה בחוק שיאפשר למשטרת ישראל לדעת כל פרט על התקשורת של אזרחי מדינת ישראל: מספרי טלפון, כתובות דואר אלקטרוני, כתובות IP, מספרי זיהוי חומרה של מכשירי טלפון ונתבי אינטרנט ועוד היד נטויה.

החל מגרסה 2.6.20 של גרעין מערכת ההפעלה לינוקס, נוספה יכולת למערכת ההפעלה המאפשרת להריץ מכונה וירטואלית¹ על גבי מערכת ההפעלה עצמה, ללא תוכנה חיצונית. אם יש ברשותכם מחשב המריץ גרסה עדכנית של מערכת הפעלה מבוססת לינוקס, הנה רשימת הצעדים כדי להפעיל את חלונות בתוך מכונה וירטואלית, בלי לכבות את הלינוקס ובלי צורך בתוכנה נוספת (כמו VMWare או VirtualBox), בעזרת KVM : Kernel Virtual Machine.

1. תוכנה המדמה מחשב נוסף [↩]

מאז אותו מקרה (שבאמת אין צורך להזכיר בשם) הרשויות בידידתנו שמעבר לים בפאניקה מוחלטת מכל דבר שמזכיר טרור (והרבה דברים שלא). בצדק או שלא בצדק – פאניקה תמיד היתה מהלך פוליטי נבון, אבל ממה אזרחי ארה”ב צריכים לדאוג יותר מטרור? מסתבר שדי הרבה.

The Novatel Wireless Merlin U740 is a good choice if you need network connectivity everywhere. This cellular modem is capable of HSDPA (the very latest 3rd generated data mode), but can also degrade down to GPRS (I haven’t tested HSCSD – the cellular old style dial-up modem, so I’m not sure its supported).

When you need to pick up a cellular modem, I highly recommend this one – mostly as installing it on a Linux operating system is completely trivial. In the past I covered setting up the Merlin U740 on Fedora 7 (post in hebrew) and while it was fairly easy using the Fedora 7 graphical configuration tools, its even easier on Ubuntu, so this time you get a story in pictures.

הדיון על למה לינוקס לא יותר נפוץ מחלונות וכו’ הוא ותיק מאוד, ועם זקן כל כך ארוך שצריך להזהר איפה דורכים, אבל כפי שדייב גאטרידג’ מציין במאמר המצוין – “Windows is Free” שלו באתר Tokyo Linux User Group – אף אחד לא מדבר על הפיל.
זה מאמר די ארוך, אבל אם מעניין אותכם לינוקס ותוכנה חופשית אני ממליץ מאוד לשבת ולקרוא אותו מהתחלה ועד הסוף, ואני לא הולך לתקצר אותו פה, בעיקר בגלל שכאן זה פוסט הגיגים קצרצר.

ממש התרשמתי מהעיצוב של האתר של Template Toolkit (צילום מסך בהמשך). ויותר משהעיצוב ממש יפה, הוא עשוי ממש טוב וכולל כל מה שאפשר לרצות מאתר תואם סטנדרטים, וכמה דברים שלא ידעתי שאני רוצה :-).
