			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Please go to <a href="https://www.google.com/">Google&#8217;s Home page</a> right now to look at the <a class="zem_slink" title="Google logo" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_logo" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank">Google Doodle</a> for <a class="zem_slink" title="Robert Moog" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Moog" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank">Robert Moog</a>&#8216;s 78th Birthday &#8211; its a fully functional synthesizer that you can play on and record yourself!</p>
<p>It works slightly better in Chrome although the latest Firefoxes can also handle the moogdoodle. I wouldn&#8217;t count on anything else being able to play this demo that uses the experimental <a href="https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/audio/raw-file/tip/webaudio/specification.html">Web Audio API for HTML 5</a> that looks to aiming to bring to the web, all the capabilities of a <a class="zem_slink" title="Commodore 64" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank">Commodore 64</a> SID <img src='http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> .</p>
<p>Things you can do (The knobs are unfortunately unmarked, so I had to guess what each knob does):</p>
<p><span id="more-1975"></span></p>
<ul>
<li>The keyboard is obviously fully active and you can play every note. You mouse is not an appropriate tool for playing on a synthesizer &#8211; use the letter keys to hit the white keys, and the number keys to hit the black keys.</li>
<li>All the knobs are operational &#8211; click on a knob once to advance it to the next preset value (in jumps of 1 or 2), or click and drag to twiddle it around to arbitrary values.</li>
<li>Change the pitch of the sound using the left wheel.</li>
<li>Change the volume using the knobs in the mixer panel &#8211; the large knob controls the total volume while the smaller knobs control the mixing of each oscillator separately.</li>
<li>Change the <a class="zem_slink" title="Oscillation" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillation" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank">oscillators</a> setup in the oscillators panel &#8211; the left knobs control each of the three oscillators&#8217; stepping, the right knobs control the wave form of the corresponding oscillator and I&#8217;m not sure what the two large knobs in the middle are supposed to be doing.</li>
<li>Apply different filters using the filter panel &#8211; I&#8217;ve played with this a bit and can&#8217;t really figure out what each knob is supposed to do exactly.</li>
<li>Control the sound envelope in the envelope panel &#8211; the three left knobs seems to control (from top to bottom) attach, decay and release. Sustain I think is set, though I may be mistaken here.</li>
<li>Use the connected <a class="zem_slink" title="Multitrack recording" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multitrack_recording" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank">4 track recorder</a> to record what you play in 4 channels &#8211; first select the track to record by clicking on the correct VU meter so it is highlighted, then click record and play something on the synthesizer. when you are done click stop and the recorder will move automatically to the next track, or you can choose your own. Press record to record the next track, and you can hear your previous track play back so you can play along yourself.</li>
<li>Play what you recorded &#8211; hit play and you will hear all 4 tracks play simultaneously.</li>
<li>Share what you record &#8211; hit the g+ icon to share your creation on Google+, or hit the link icon to get a link you can send to people.</li>
</ul>
<p>I&#8217;m not a musician, but I&#8217;d love to hear what you people have cooked up, so send me some links <img src='http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Its called <a href="http://www.lichteblau.com/ldapvi/">ldapvi</a>, and its just about what you&#8217;d expect with that name <img src='http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> . The author would like you to think about it as <code><a class="zem_slink" title="Vipw" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vipw" rel="wikipedia">vipw</a></code> for your <a class="zem_slink" title="Lightweight Directory Access Protocol" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Directory_Access_Protocol" rel="wikipedia">LDAP</a> based authentication, and in addition to a few command line option it really isn&#8217;t much more then that (UI-wise):</p>
<p><span id="more-1947"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/ldapvi.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1949" title="ldapvi" src="http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/ldapvi.png" alt="" width="484" height="630" /></a></p>
<p>How I got to it? For some reason, when running Fedora&#8217;s KDE software management tool, this was the only suggested software in response to the search &#8220;LDAP&#8221; (which wasn&#8217;t a library, plugin or command line tool).</p>
<p>I gave it a chance and actually, its really useful syntax.</p>
<p>Entries are separated by one or more empty lines, and each start with an entry ID number followed by the fully qualified DN of the entry. To edit an entry, just change the following lines in any way you see fit &#8211; updating, adding or removing properties is as easy as writing in VI. If you want to add a new entry, create a new batch of lines but start with a line that has the word <code>add</code> (instead of an entry id) followed by the DN you want to add.</p>
<p>A note to remember: the passwords are shown and editable (at least if you log in as a user with full administrative permissions) &#8211; as the hash result, exactly as its stored in the directory server itself. You can manipulate them just like any other LDAP attribute, but to set up a new password you&#8217;d have to first generate the hash for the new password, and save that. One option is to use the OpenLDAP <code>slappasswd</code>, for example:</p>
<p><code>slappasswd -h {SHA} -s somepassword<br />
</code></p>
<p>The <code>-h</code> parameter specifies the hashing algorithm to use, and you have to put that text in the attribute value before the hash result. <a href="http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/347.html">This OpenLDAP FAQ entry has more on the subject of password hashes</a>, including some useful scripts.</p>
<p>When you &#8220;save&#8221; the buffer, ldapvi will prompt you for a confirmation, which may looks like this:</p>
<p><code><br />
add: 3, rename: 0, modify: 0, delete: 0<br />
Action? [yYqQvVebB*rsf+?] ?<br />
</code></p>
<p>At which point you are supposed to hit &#8220;y&#8221; to update the server, though as you can see there are quite a few alternative choices (and in the spirit of VI, presented in a very concise way). And basically that&#8217;s it.</p>
<p>So if you&#8217;re looking for a good tool to manage your LDAP directory, and your&#8217;re a die-hard fan of VI, this just may be the thing for you. Me? Its a useful tool and I&#8217;ll be happy to keep it on my belt to fall on to if I&#8217;m fresh out of options (which is actually currently the case), but I&#8217;ll keep looking for something more&#8230; how shall I put it&#8230; graphical? less looking like an 80s reject? no, I know &#8211; something I can happily let MSCEs use <img src='http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> .</p>

<p>It was obviously way to geeky for the task at hand, so here it is now for you to answer &#8211; or better yet: invent your a worst geeky personality question:</p>

<p>I, for laughs, I&#8217;d say I would have been a Duff&#8217;s device &#8211; complicated and impossible to debug <img src='http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Its the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">first</span> annual <em>catholic</em> conference on &#8220;<a class="zem_slink" title="Geocentric model" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocentric_model">Geocentrism</a>&#8221;, where you&#8217;d find interesting lectures such as &#8220;Scientific experiments showing the earth motionless in space&#8221; and &#8220;Geocentrism: they know it by they&#8217;re hiding it&#8221;.</p>
<p>Brilliant, and just when you though its safe to walk outside.</p>
<p>Thanks to <a href="http://www.skepticality.com/index.php">Skepticality</a>, some brave fools are going to go there, possibly armed with t-shirts proclaiming their heliocentric beliefs. I probably would have put out something like &#8220;Galileo was right but all I got was this lousy t-shirt&#8221;. Or something.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sometimes, when you try to develop things that work in Internet Explorer, you get to a point where you can just scratch your head and wonder &#8220;what the he*$ where they thinking of?!?&#8221;. This is one of those cases:</p>
<p><script src="/wp/wp-content/plugins/jwplayer/jwplayer.js?p=thingsnstuff-9011&amp;i=http://geek.co.il/wp/2010/10/06/more-internet-explorer-funny-behaviors&amp;f=http://geek.co.il/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/IE7-acting-funny.flv"></script></p>
<p>This is in Internet Explorer 8 when set to IE7 mode, but this is very faithful to the original as I&#8217;ve tested it on a real IE7 and it behaves the same. What happens here is that when you scroll the page down, all absolutely positioned elements (the two &#8220;combo boxes&#8221; which are a custom UI widget and the text &#8220;Dimensions:&#8230; at the top right corner&#8221;) get pulled down a few pixels. When you scroll up, they get put back in the correct place.</p>
<p><span id="more-1664"></span></p>
<p>I would (maybe) understand if that would have happened only for the custom UI widgets (as there is a lot of Javascript code in place to support these, and I would understand if it behaves funny on broken browsers), but it affects the absolutely positioned text exactly the same, and there is nothing funky with that &#8211; its simply a block of text that is absolutely positioned.</p>
<p>On a slightly different subject, here is a useful tip for doing using Javascript to manipulate elements in IE7: if you have some Javascript that acts immediately after the page loads and put more content on the page and moves some elements around, if any of these elements are absolutely positioned then IE7 will ignore any changes to their layout, such as setting margins (especially negative margins) and such. This happens if you both change the element&#8217;s layout implictly (by adding content, for example) and explicitly (by setting style attributes) in the same Javascript call &#8211; the style attributes are ignored. </p>
<p>What you should do is to change the content in one Javascript call, then let the layout settle by exiting back to the rendering engine and then coming back to Javascript to change the layout. I do it like this:</p>
<p><code><br />
$('block').innerHTML = 'Some text that should be updated';<br />
window.setTimeout(function() {<br />
    $('block').style.marginTop = '-20px';<br />
},0);<br />
</code></p>
<p>The window.setTimeout() with a zero miliseconds timeout will cause the code to stop executing without doing the style manipulation, the Javascript machine hands the execution back to the browser which then lets the rendering engine repaint the screen with the updated content &#8211; the problem with IE7 is that the rendering engine fails to take into account style changes that were made after content changes were done in the same Javascript execution, so we don&#8217;t do that. As soon as the rendering engine is done &#8211; less then one milisecond later &#8211; the timeout kicks in and adjusts the style, and finally handing the execution back to the rendering engine to adjust that as well.</p>

<p>What is interesting (to me anyway), is that the game is full encoded using HTML and <a class="zem_slink" title="JavaScript" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaScript">Javascript</a> &#8211; each ghost or pacman and also all the dots are graphics assigned using CSS to HTML DIV elements, which are moved on the screen using Javascript (<a href="http://www.google.com/logos/js/pacman10-hp.3.js">source code is here</a> at the moment &#8211; it is minified but its not hard to figure out what is going on).</p>
<h4>[Update:]</h4>
<p>As per the schedule, the pac-man game was removed after about 48 hours.</p>
