So why do that? because you can try the latest beta drivers from Nvidia’s web site (the stable drivers are usually already supported by rpmfusion) and sometimes the rpmfusion complex kernel module setup doesn’t work well – especially if you install custom kernels.

Warning: this procedure requires you to know the password for the “root” account and login using the text console.

Installation procedure

1. Go to Nvidia’s web site and look for the driver that you want to download. After you select the driver and click the large “Download” button, you will be taken to the license agreement screen where you are expected to click the “Agree & Download” button. Don’t click on it, instead right click and copy the link’s URL.
2. Open a terminal – such as gnome-terminal on GNOME or konsole on KDE.
3. Type su - to get root access (you will need to type in the root password).
4. Type ‘wget‘ followed by a space and paste the URL you got from Nvidia. It should look something like this:
   wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/285.05.09/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run
5. After the download is done, we will need to turn off the default nouveau driver so that the Nvidia driver can be loaded: type ‘gedit /etc/default/grub‘ to edit the GRUB default command line arguments. In the window that opens you should have text that looks like this:
   GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet rhgb"
   You need to add the arguments “rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0” to this list. Comparing to the above example, after editing it should look like this:
   GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet rhgb rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0"
   After you’ve changed the text, save and close the editor
6. Recreate the GRUB configuration file using the command
   grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
7. Reboot the computer. When the computer boots, the boot splash screen should not be graphical and when the login screen comes up it should be in a very low resolution.
8. Hit CTRL+ALT+F2 to move to the text console and login as “root”
9. Execute
   init 3
   to disable the graphical display manager.
10. Run the Nvidia insaller by running it through the bash shell script processor, like this:
    bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run
    be sure to replace the file name with the actual file you downloaded – usually typing “NV” and pushing the TAB key will complete the file name correctly.
11. In the NVidia driver setup answer “Yes” to all the questions.
12. When the setup completes, execute
    init 5
    to bring back the graphical display manager. This will move the screen to the graphical login and you can now log in with the NVidia driver enabled, but at this point its recommended that you use CTRL+ALT+F2 again to get back to the text console and logout from there. Use CTRL+ALT+F1 to get back to the graphical display.

If you ever want to change back to the original configuration, just edit the GRUB default argument list by removing the arguments we’ve added at step 5, recreate the GRUB configuration file as in step 6, then log in as root in a text console and do these steps:

1. Disable the graphical manager as in step 9.
2. Uninstall the Nvidia driver using
   bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run --uninstall
3. Remove the Nvidia-generated configuration file using
   rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. Execute
   reboot
   To reboot your computer.

הכותרת נשמעת מבטיחה, והנה התקציר הלא מקצועי שלי:

המחקר התמקד בפיתוח תוכנה ואלגוריתמים לזיהוי אמין ואוטומטי של פרטים בודדים בסביבה טבעית וסואנת על ידי השוואתם לתמונות מקור איכותיות שהוכנו מראש. נשמע מוכר למישהו?

באופן ספציפי, המחקר התמקד בבעיה רצינית בזיהוי בעלי חיים – תמונות הדפוס הן של פרוה או כסות אחרת (נוצות במקרה של הפינגווינים שהיו אוכלוסית המטרה המקורית) שעוברות עיוותים תוך כדי תנועה של החיה, והאלגוריתמים צריכים לזהות את הדה-פורמציה בכל תמונה בנפרד ולתקן את הדפוס בהתאם כדי להתאים אותו למידע הביומטרי המקורי. בזיהוי בני-אדם יש גם עיוותים מסוימים, אבל הבעיה פחותה בהרבה.

בכל מקרה, המחקר מדבר על אחוזי אמינות של 92% בזיהוי אינדיבידואלי של פרטים, שנראה לי לא רע בכלל בהתחשב בכך שהמצלמה המזהה היתה בעלת הפרדה של מגה-פיקסל בודד. בנוסף בהתחשב בכך שזה מחקר אוניברסטאי, עם תקציב בהתאם, ובבעיות של עיוות דפוסי פרווה, נראה לי שאם נמפה את הידע הרלוונטי לבעיה דומה אבל עם פרמטרים אחרים, לדוגמה: תקציב ממשלתי, מצלמות בהפרדה מאוד גבוהה וכוח מיחשוב בהתאם, והתאמה של פריטים עם עיוותים הרבה יותר קטנים (נגיד.. פנים של בני אדם), אז – ורק לצורך הדיון – יש מצב שאפשר להגיע לאחוזי הצלחה גבוהים בצורה משמעותית, אולי אפילו מעל 95%.

מערכת כזאת, אם מישהו יפעיל כזו – בהסתמך כמובן על מאגר תמונות איכותי של כלל אוכלוסית היעד (נגיד, כל אזרחי מדינה מסוימת) – בהחלט יכול לעזור למשטרה לפתור פשעים מסוכנים, לפתור פשעים קצת פחות מסוכנים, לזהות אנשים שחשודים ב”התססת הרגשות בציבור”, לעקוב אחרי התנועה של הבן-דוד של אשתו של קצין תחנת רמת-גן וכיוצא באלה.

נכון טכנולוגיה מודרנית זה מגניב נורא?

הבעיה שלי היא העיתונות הישראלית (כתבות ראיתי רק ב”ידיעות אחרונות” אבל אין לי ספק ששאר עיתוני הארץ היו מתנהגים באותה צורה) והסופר-ליברליזם שעטף אותה פתאום בכתבות הצבע על יובל טופר. אין שום מילה של ביקורת על ההגדרתו של יובל טופר כגבר. זה לא שאני רוצה לראות דעות ימי-בינמיות חשוכות בעיתונות הישראלית של המאה ה-21, אבל איזשהו מילה של ביקורת? כלום? אז לי יש בעיה: אם מניחים מראש שיש רק שתי הגדרות אפשריות לאדם – גבר או אישה (שזו נראית הנחת הבסיס של כל הכתבות בנושא), אז אני לא רואה שום דרך שבה אפשר להגדיר את נושא המאמר כ”גבר”.

בואו נסתכל על זה כחשבון פשוט: או שהיא יותר גבר, הוא שהוא יותר אישה ואז היא צריכה ליפול לאחד משני הדליים – זה או זה. אז מה היה לנו: הוא החליט להגדיר את עצמו כגבר (החלטה חשובה לכל הדעות), עשה ניתוח הקטנת חזה (בינינו – לא מוצלח במיוחד: לי יש חזה יותר שטוח משלו, ואני שמן) ולקח הורמונים גבריים תקופת זמן מסויימת (לא ברור לי כמה זמן, אבל כנראה פחות משלוש שנים). לעומת זאת, היא חייה במערכת יחסים זוגית עם גבר ולפחות מהקריאה שלי במאמר איך שהיא מתארת את מערכת היחסים הזאת אז היא בפרוש משחקת את האישה במערכת יחסים זו, בנוסף היא שמרה על כל סמני המין הנקביים העיקריים – בכוונה, ולבסוף עשתה את המעשה הנקבי האולטימטיבי ונכנסה להריון – להבנתי בצורה המסורתית שעושים זאת בני זוג בריאים במערכת יחסים מסודרת – הווה אומר, קיום יחסי מין מלאים ללא הגנה. כשאני עושה את החשבון הזה אז יובל טופר בהחלט נופל לדלי המסומן “אישה” ויש מידה מסויימת של צביעות פוסט-ליברלית מעצבנת בלהדביק את הכותרת “גבר” בכל פעם שמדברים עליה.

אני לא אומר את זה בגלל ש”מי שנולד נקבה חייב להשאר כך” או אפילו “המגדר חייב להקבע לפי המטען הגנטי” או כל שטות שמרנית ממסדית אחרת – לדעתי האישית מגדר הוא לא חלוקה לשתי מחיצות ואפילו לא קשת של אפשרויות שאדם יכול לבחור איפה הוא ממקם את עצמו בין 100% גבר לאישה מוחלטת, אלא יותר כמו מרחב של אפשרויות – וכן, יש אנשים שהם פודלים – אבל אם הנחנו מלכתחילה את הדעה הממסדרית הישראלית על חלוקת תפקידים מגדריים, אז לפחות בואו נהיה הגיוניים והגונים לעצמנו? (או לחלופין, שהעיתונות באמת תהיה יותר ליברלית ולא רק כמס שפתיים ל”קהילה”, מדי פעם. אבל הבטחתי להיות מציאותי אז בואו נשכח מהכיוון הזה ).

ורק לסיכום קצר – כל הדיון הזה הוא אדיוטי מכיוון שלעשות כזה מהומה תקשורתית מהסיפור הזה, כאילו שזה חדשות יותר חשובות מ”אילן גרפל חוזר הביתה” זה טפשי לגמרי ולדעתי האישית יותר גורם נזק מאשר תועלת לליברלים שרוצים לזרוק את כל הגדרות המגדר הקשוחות לפח.

The main problem with using Consolas on your Linux workstation, is that this font is provided by Microsoft, and while if you are running MS-Windows (or even Mac OS-X) it may already be installed – as it is bundled with many Microsoft products, us in the Linux world have no easy (and legal) way to get to use Consolas in our code editing. Unlike Microsoft Core Fonts for the Web Consolas is not available for download – probably for the same reason the core fonts packages were pulled. But as Consolas is bundled with many Microsoft products, some are available for free download for anyone, we can use that to get us some nifty Consolas prettiness in our day to day Linux computing.

The following steps will allow you to get Consolas on your system rather easily (assuming you don’t flinch at using a terminal) and without installing any Microsoft products. I’m pretty sure its also legal to do so, even when taking into account Microsoft’s EULA, and a discussion of this is at the end if you are interested. Well, into the fray!

Requirements

you need to have the following software packages installed. If you don’t already have them installed, they are available for all Linux operating system, probably using your built-in software management UI, such as Ubuntu’s Software Center or Fedora’s Software Management.

• Wine – the Microsoft Windows compatibility layer for Linux
• cabextract – a Microsoft cabinet file format extractor

Procedure

After you have these installed, lets start going to the Microsoft download center and downloading the latest edition of the freePowerPoint Viewer. In the page linked, click on “Download” and download the resulting file to somewhere on your computer. The default download location for Fedora is the “Downloads” directory and for Ubuntu it is the “Desktop” directory.

Next, let’s open a terminal window (“gnome-terminal” if you are running a GNOME desktop, or “konsole” if you are running a KDE desktop), and follow these steps:

• mkdir tmp – Create a temporary directory. The process involves creating a “wine prefix” and unpacking some files into it, and I wouldn’t want to mess up an existing wine setup if you have one.
• cd tmp – move to the new temporary directory.
• WINEPREFIX=$(pwd) wine ~/Downloads/PowerPointViewer.exe /extract:c:\\ – ask the PowerPoint Viewer, nicely, to extract its content to what Windows call “C:\” instead of installing it. Wine will setup a simulated “C: drive” inside your temporary directory and will then run the installer – you will have to read and agree to the PowerPoint Viewer EULA, but I don’t think you have anything to worry about (see the discussion below). For this command I’m assuming you’ve downloaded the PowerPoint Viewer executable to the “Downloads” directory. If this is not the case, you may change the command appropriately.
• cabextract drive_c/ppviewer.cab -F 'CONSOLA*' – The installer has put a “Microsoft Cabinet file” into the simulated “C: drive”, that contains the files we need, so here we extract the Consolas TTF files from the cabinet.
• rename 'y/A-Z/a-z/;s/consola/Consolas /;s/b/Bold/;s/i/Italic/;s/z/Bold Italic/;s/ \./ Regular./' *.TTF – Optional step – rename the extract files to something that a looks humanly readable. Unless you want to keep the TTF files for future use, you can skip this step.

Now you can install the new fonts – open a file browser and go to your temporary directory. Under GNOME you can install the fonts by opening the font file and the font viewer window should have an “Install Font” button at the bottom right corner. Under KDE, right click the font files and select Actions->Install… and in the dialog that opens select “Personal” to install the font only for you or “System” to install the font to all the users (this will require a system administrator password). After you complete this step for all the TTF files that were created, you can copy the files elsewhere if you want to save them as backup for when you want to reinstall your computer. Finally it is recommended to remove the temporary directory and all its content – you have no further need for this.

Legal Issues

I am not a lawyer and the following is not actually a legal argument, but lets try to look at the above procedure through the Microsoft EULA that you have to agree to in order to get the files:

It is my belief that this procedure is perfectly reasonable for personal use on any device you use – paragraph 1.a of the EULA says “You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices.” The rest of the paragraph immediately goes and limits the use of the software but I do no believe that its possible for a license to limit the type of use you do with a software you legally obtained (as long as that use itself is not infringing on the copyright on the software). Its like buying a car and have the manufacturer say that this car may not be used to drive on dirt roads – the manufacturer may refuse to service the car after you drive on dirt roads, but he cannot sue your for violating the “terms of use”.

Please note that after extracting the TTF files, you may not distribute the files, i.e. copy them to other people – this is strictly prohibited both under copyright law and under paragraph 1.b of the EULA, because it will not be “complete and unmodified” copies of the PowerPoint Viewer. You may, though, distribute copies of the original PowerPoint Viewer download to friends along with these instructions .

Regarding the legality of extracting files from the installer, the Microsoft EULA has this to say: “You may not work around any technical limitations in the software” – but we didn’t work around any technical limitations: the Microsoft software itself extracted the files for our use, so there is no technical limitation prevent us from copying files off the installer.

The PowerPoint cabinet also contains all the other fonts of the Microsoft ClearType font collection, of which only Calibri would be of any interest to users, the rest aren’t that interesting but then again – I hate serifs (interestingly all of the ClearType font collection fonts start with “C”).

הדבר הבא לעשות היה לבדוק למה, ומסתבר שרוב התנועה באתר שלי בחודשים האחרונים היתה מחיפושי גוגל שהובילו למאמרים על Ubuntu, ובהחלט נראה שהתנועה על המאמרים האלה יבשה: בכל יולי היו פחות מ-500 כניסות לכל מאמר.

Just wanted to let everyone know

Microsoft is understandably concerned, as they currently hold a “perpetual, royalty-free” license to all patents (which means that if the buyer doesn’t get to re-license with existing license holders, then they won’t get any more money from Microsoft on these patents), but what I’m ranting about is not their legitimate concern, but their attempt to color this as “unfair” – quips Techcrunch:

Microsoft says that’s unfair. And while they don’t specifically mention Google, it seems pretty clear who they’re thinking about when they write that a termination of existing licensing agreements “would result in considerable disruption in the development and enhancement of various existing technologies and give the prospective purchaser an unfair competitive advantage”.

This may be unfair, but Microsoft has done this exact same thing in the past, including the very near past where immediately after buying Skype, and just a few days after Microsoft promised that Skype will continue to be offered on non-Microsoft platforms, the “Skype for Asterisk” product was terminated disallowing Digium to sell any more Skype integration module for their successful (and open source) VoIP solution.

Obviously this is a move perpetrated to allow Microsoft’s competing VoIP product (Lync) an unfair competitive advantage by offering features that Digium can no longer offer – not because of technical issues but because Microsoft will not allow it.

Taking that into account, Microsoft claiming the sale of this patents to Google is unfair is just the pot calling the  kettle black.

Evolution works great when running under GNOME, but if you hate GNOME 3 as much as I do, then you are likely to try to run Evolution under a recent KDE 4. And then problems start mounting – there’s the file dialogs which look completely different and don’t inter-operate with KDE’s virtual file system layer (KIO), but the most annoying problem is saving the passwords for your email, address book and calendar services.

Evolution relies on GNOME’s keyring service to store passwords for remote services, and that service is not running when you start KDE. Without the keyring, Evolution will keep asking you for passwords to all your email services when you start up, and for all your address book services when you try to compose an email. Which wouldn’t have been that bad if not for the fact that before popping up the password dialog, Evolution spends minutes (!!) trying to contact the GNOME keyring service. Only after being frozen for a couple of minutes you get asked for the first password, and if you have more then one service then please wait two more minutes while Evolution tries fruitlessly to contact GNOME keyring again!

The solution is simple – have GNOME keyring launch automatically when you log in to KDE, just like it does for GNOME. There are several ways to do this – for example using KDE’s “startup applications” system or writing custom profile scripts (I’ve tried both), but the more elegant solution I found in fedorahosted.org where someone committed a simple script that generates GNOME keyring startup and shutdown scripts for KDE. I’m guessing this is used in the KDE live CD spins for Fedora.

Anyway, this script can easily adapted to generate GNOME keyring integration scripts for your local KDE installation. Just start Konsole, and paste this into the command line:

Now you can log out, and when you log back in, GNOME keyring will be running in the background, providing keyring services to GNOME applications. This will also make working with the Fedora bug reporting tool – ABRT – so much easier as that too relies on GNOME keyring and suffers from the same “freeze while looking for the keyring service” issue that Evolution suffers from.
