קיבלתי שדרוג בדואר:

זה לא כמו עוד חיים, אבל לעלות לדרגה הבאה זה גם לא רע

עוד טיפה על פוליטיקה, לפני שאנחנו חוזרים לשידורים הרגילים: יצא לי היום לקרוא את ידיעות אחרונות⁽¹⁾ והיה מעניין לקרוא היום את הכתבה המרכזית במוסף “24 שעות” של ידיעות אחרונות:

תחת הכותרת (המאוד עיתונאית) ”השלט שלפני הסערה”, כתבי ידיעות אחרונות יצאו להפגין מול כמה אתרים ציבוריים מעניינים כמו עיריית תל-אביב, תחנת כוח והקרייה למחקר גרעיני בנגב ולבדוק את תגובת האחראיים במקום. אני מאוד ממליץ לקרוא את הכתבה בעצמכם, כי המסקנות מעניינות. בין השאר הם מציינים שם (בהנחיית עו”ד דן יקיר מהאגודה לזכויות האזרח) מה מותר ואסור למפגינים לעשות ומה מותר לעשות למפגינים – חומר קריאה חובה למי שמתכנן לעמוד על זכויותיו החברתיות בישראל של שנות האלפיים!

לצערי הכתבה לא זמינה באינטרנט (לפי מה שחיפשתי), כנראה ”למהרשת” מאמינים בעיתונות הכתובה יותר מבאתרי אינטרנט.

1. מה שלא יוצא לי כמעט בכלל [↩]

This blog is not a news source, but I’m baffled how almost no one reported on this (Thanks for Linux Outlaws for bringing this up), but here it is directly from the horse’s mouth (as the saying goes):

Ballmer: I mean, look, I assume any time a customer talks to us about it, it’s genuine competition. It doesn’t mean that we don’t do well. ... We gain market—Linux is a genuine competitor, and yet we’ve built market share against Linux on the server, up to about 75 percent market share.

The emphasis is mine, the rest is from CNet’s interview of Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer starting at 9:30 minutes (transcript here look for the question about Google Docs).

Now, I’m not one to call Steve Ballmer a liar, but I would be very interested to see where this figure is coming from – he can’t seriously suggest that 75% of the world’s servers are running Microsoft Windows? Another interesting question is how the CNet interviewers didn’t take him up on this outrageous declaration.

A long time ago I subscribed to some (legitimate) web site and ever since I’ve been getting some weekly or so newsletters from them with third part offers. Recently the rate of these newsletters have increased to sometimes two a day at which point I’ve decided to take them up on the offer to opt-out of their mailings.

It was a simple thing really – click the clearly marked “opt-out link” at the top of the email, and I get directed to a web page with a clear “Confirm Opt-Out” button. It doesn’t get much better then that, until the confirmation page that made me do double take (or in my case, “K, thanks, . eh, what was that?! ”):

Why, oh mighty lords of the internet, does it take 10 days to process an electronic confirmation? Reminds me of that joke about filing the form in cabinet, letting it age for a week before pulling it out for processing.

הנה דבר שצץ לי לאחרונה באוסף רסס – עוד דיון על פיצוץ אוכלוסין. אני לא יכול להתכחש לבעיה שהוא מדבר עליה, וההצגה שלו של הבעיה היא בהחלט מוצלחת (בקצרה: בחידה הידועה על חיידקים/תולעים/יצורים המכפילים את עצמם וממלאים מיכל בשעה, חמש דקות לפני השעה היעודה רק 3% מהשטח מלא – שאר 97% נגמרים בחמש הדקות האחרונות).

גם הפתרון שלו – בקרת אוכלוסין על ידי מניפולציה גנטית של בני אדם – לא מופרח לחלוטין לדעתי. אם כי פתרון שנראה לי הרבה יותר סביר בהתחשב בקהל היעד הוא מלחמה לא קונבנציונאלית עם הרבה מאוד הרוגים אזרחיים. עוד כל מיני אנשים שדיברתי איתם חושבים שזה רעיון טוב – מי בעד אפוקליפסה, לא עכשיו, אולי בעוד 5-10 שנים?

Back to the lost cause of document interoperability (I just love lost causes): as you may or may not remember⁽¹⁾, back in 2008 – almost exactly 1 year ago, after the OOXML fiasco – I wrote a tirade about how Microsoft can attack the (really) open OpenDocument Format by botching their implementation of it in MS-Office 2007 SP2.

Well, guess what – they did botch that and while Rob Weir takes a Hanlon’s razor view on this, I can only say: “Told you”.

1. מה, שחור זה תמיד באופנה [↩]

אחי מסביר למה הוא כותב בלוג, והתחלתי להגיב אבל חשבתי שאולי מגיע פה הסבר יותר רציני:

כמו שערן אומר – אני לא כאן כדי להיות מפורסם או להרוויח הרבה כסף. אני לא חושב שאי פעם השלתי את עצמי שהבלוג הזה יהיה פופולארי אפילו ברמה של כותבים בבלוגוספרה הישראלית, אבל אני בכל זאת משתדל לכתוב (יש תקופות טובות יותר ויש תקופות פחות טובות, אני עומד על בסה”כ כ-300 רשומות).

הסיבה שלי היא קצת אוטוביוגרפית – אני חושב ועושה הרבה דברים שנראים לי חשובים, וחבל לי שהם יעלמו: אם היה לי רעיון מעניין אני רוצה לדבר עליו ושזה לא יעלם שעה אחר כך. אם הייתי במקום ונהניתי בו, זה נחמד לחזור ולקרוא על זה ולהזכר.

זה בעצם היומן שלא כתבתי אף פעם, ואני טכנולוג – אם לכתוב יומן אז רק ברשת. וכבונוס יש גם תגובות ודיונים – אני תמיד שמח לשמוע מאנשים שאני לא מכיר או שלא דיברתי איתם כבר הרבה זמן.

I’m not much of a music listener – I don’t like to listen to music idly and I’d rather much listen to talk shows when I’m doing things that do not require absolute concentration – for example while driving, cooking or doing house chores. A couple of years ago I found that podcasts are very handy in those situations – when you are away from a computer and there is nothing interesting on the radio (the demise of the radio talk show would be a subject of a different post). My current podcatching setup I think would interest people, but I’ll also leave that for another post.

Today I want to discuss a new podcast that just started⁽¹⁾: Free as in node.
