ארוע חשוב, אולי, אבל בד”כ דבר כזה לא יקבל פוקוס בבלוג שלי, לולא רשימת התכונות החדשות⁽¹⁾ ב-Mac OS X 10.5, מערכת ההפעלה החדשה של אפל.

מי שיסתכל בעיון בעמוד (אין קישור ישיר, אני מצטער – תלחצו על הקישור שלמעלה) ימצא לקראת הסוף את קטגוריית “UNIX”, תחתיה יש כל מיני דברים חדשים בלאופרד -חלקם לא ממש קשורים ישירות ל-UNIX, אבל לא נורא – אבל הפריט הראשון בקטגוריה מאוד מעניין, ואני מצטט:

מעבר לעובדה שאפשר לפתוח דיון לא קצר בנושא האם סתם “UNIX Certification” מספיקה למערכת הפעלה שרוצה להשתלב בסביבת יוניקס ארגונית מלאה (וראה ערך פרוייקט פרוייקט אינדיאנה של סאן שמטרתו לגרום לסולאריס להרגיש כמו לינוקס כדי לפנות לפלח השוק הכי גדול היום של התקנות UNIX: לינוקס⁽²⁾ ), יש לשים לב להערה הקטנה שמסתתרת לה בסוף הפסקה:

כמעט⁽¹⁾ כבר הגענו ל-web 3.0, אבל אנשים עדיין לא בטוחים מה זה web 2.0. כששואלים אותי, אני מאמץ את ההגדרה של טים אוריילי (שהרי בגדול הוא המציא את המונח), אבל הדעות חלוקות ויש חפיפה גדולה בין הגדרות שונות.

בכל מקרה, הנה סרט וידאו ישן יחסית שמצאתי מחדש שמסביר יפה מאוד את הרעיונות של web 2.0 :

שוב לא הקשבתי לעצה המעולה הזאת והזמנתי מוצר באתר P1000⁽¹⁾, ושוב אכלתי אותה.

רציתי לקנות מתאם USB לדיסק קשיח (SATA ו-IDE), והוא היה כל כך זול (89 ש”ח) שהזמנתי כבר שניים (המוצרים האלה בד”כ די גרועים אז כבר שיהיה אחד רזרבי) – סה”כ 178 ש”ח. היום באתי לאסוף את ההזמנה מהדואר, והדבר הראשון שאני רואה זה החשבונית שמודבקת על הקופסה – סה”כ לתשלום 178 כפול 2 = 356 ש”ח. אבל חמור מזה – בקופסה היה רק מתאם אחד!! אז גם נראה ששילמתי כפול 2 ממה שהזמנתי וגם קיבלתי רק חצי מהמוצרים.

לזכותו של הספק (מטריקס אלקטרוניה בכפר סבא) יאמר, שמי שענתה לי בטלפון כשהתקשרתי להתלונן היתה מנומסת והבטיחה לי שהחשבונית היא טעות ובאמת חוייבתי על הסכום הנכון ושהיא תשלח לי מייד עוד יחידה. נראה מה יגיע.

עדכון: היחידה השניה לא הגיעה, מה שאומר שרק שילמתי פי שניים על המוצר, ולא פי 4. לבושתי אני אציין שחצי שנה אחרי, עדיין לא השתמשתי במכשיר…

1. שאגב – ביטלתי את החשבון שלי ב-P1000 כי הם החליטו להפסיק לתמוך ב-Firefox [↩]

AOL has upgraded many of its services in the last year – they have a youtube-like video service (which interestingly broadcasts video clips from all other major video sites), Music service (that doesn’t work unless you have MS-Windows), iGoogle like personal page, and new web mail.

The AOL mail team add a lot of new features to their mail system and have not neglected to upgrade their backend servers as well, even the error messages:

The Novatel Wireless Merlin U740 is a good choice if you need network connectivity everywhere. This cellular modem is capable of HSDPA (the very latest 3rd generated data mode), but can also degrade down to GPRS (I haven’t tested HSCSD – the cellular old style dial-up modem, so I’m not sure its supported).

When you need to pick up a cellular modem, I highly recommend this one – mostly as installing it on a Linux operating system is completely trivial. In the past I covered setting up the Merlin U740 on Fedora 7 (post in hebrew) and while it was fairly easy using the Fedora 7 graphical configuration tools, its even easier on Ubuntu, so this time you get a story in pictures.

Every now and then there’s a post/article/opinion-paper by someone lamenting about the demise of such and such cool device/computer/technology/service thingy. Which is cool – I’ve done my share of bemoaning too, and its definitely fun! (it goes well with the whole ranting thing that bloging is all about).

But its easy to lose perspective of the reality of the situation – more often then not, it wasn’t because the “bad guys” weren’t playing fair and messed up the market – to gain dominance with their inferior technology. A lot of time, the “superior” technology in question got trashed had it coming for and we’re all for the better because of that.

It can be argued that doing so is not the smartest thing ever, but I needed some new features available in Fedora 7 and not in CentOS 5, and I needed them on a remote server that I couldn’t just go to and re-install. So I figured both operating system are based on a previous version of Fedora (I think both are based on Fedora Core 6, but CentOS 5 may be based on Fedora Core 5), so it should be easy enough to upgrade from the older to the newer ?

הטלפון הראשי שלי היום הוא נוקיה 6600 שלא היה חדש כשקיבלתי אותו והיום הוא בן שנתיים וחצי, שזה גיל מכובד לכל הדעות לטלפון מודרני. כתוצאה מכך, הוא כבר לא משמש אותי באותה יעילות כמו בעבר. מעבר לכך שהממשק כבר די איטי והבטריה לא מחזיקה מעמד מספיק זמן (שני סממנים לטלפון ישן), הצרכים שלי גדלו ואני רוצה יותר: אני רוצה יותר דואר אלקטרוני (הודעה של 1 MB מכניעה לחלוטין את הטלפון) ואני רוצה תמיכה בקבצים מצורפים, אני רוצה יותר web בטלפון (ולא דרך האופרה מיני), ואני רוצה יותר קבצים ומוזיקה.

אין ברירה אלא לרכוש טלפון חדש, אבל איזה ?

Read the press release on Jonathan Schwartz’s blog (Sun’s CEO).

Its definitely a first time a major producer of microelectronics has released their designs to the public under a free license (free as in speech), and one can’t but wonder what are the ramifications of such a bold statement. One might argue that the SPARC design has lost to its competitors of the x86 type a long time ago and the Niagra models (The nickname for the UltraSPARC/OpenSPARC T1 and T2) are just the death throes of an dying product line. Granted, the T1 and more so the T2 are indeed of the top performing chips available right now – if not the top, but it can’t be argued that they met with little commercial success.
