ועוד עצומה
למי שקורא את הבלוג שלי בעזרת קורא רסס כלשהו – יש לי עכשיו סרט אדום באתר. הסיפור הוא ש-Mac-It, קהילת משתמשי המקינטוש בישראל (לא היו יכולים למצוא שם בעברית לקהילה ישראלית ?) הרימו עצומה הקוראת לבעלי אתרים להתחיל לתמוך בדפדפנים תואמי תקנים בנוסף לאינטרנט אקספלורר.
לא שאני באמת חושב שזה הולך לשנות משהו, בטח שלא בטווח הקצר, אבל עד שההייפ יפוג, אני משנס את מותני ומצטרף גם למאבק 😉 לדעתי, הדיווח על האתרים שיש להם באתר העצומה יכול להיות הרבה יותר מעניין מהעצומה עצמה, בעיקר אם יחברו אותו לאיזה מסד נתונים שיתן כלים לארגן את הקהילה ולעקוב אחרי איזה אתרים צריכים תיקונים (וגם מי יותר ומי פחות) ולאפשר להפעיל לחץ איפה שצריך.

Is it really only idealism, evangelism, and interest-free initiative?
I’m going to earn form this by having access to more web sites. Web site owners are going to earn from this by getting more visitors.
The printmall.co.il web site (an Israeli version of CafePress – they sell specially printed t-shirts and stuff) at the time had published statistics about web browser usage: according to them, Firefox users account for about 15% of the total visits, but – over 60% of total sales!!. So having access to Firefox users should increase web site profitability.

Personally I preferred to create a web site that supports standards, rather a web site that supports specific web browser.
The reason is simple actually. It takes much more effort to make things work on all web browsers, and if we will force the web browsers developers to work with standards, our (site builders) life will be more simple, and our clients usually will increase the amount of people that might buy from them, simply because they don’t have to choose specific web browser to work with.
So I believe that if we will force everyone to use standard based web browsers, everyone (maybe except Microsoft) will gain from it.
The problem is that web development is not that simple – no browser is 100% standard compliant – for any browser you need to do workarounds. If you only test your site with Internet Explorer, then you will get an Internet Explorer only web site. If you only test your side with Mozilla Firefox, then you will get a Firefox only web site (I know, because I’ve done this a lot).
Making a site that works with all browsers is not simply writing according to some standard – its about testing your web site, the entire web site which can be thousands of page, with all the relevant web browsers. Which is a lot of work.
