My blog was defaced yesterday
It wasn’t cool, but thanks to Avi Alkalay who noticed it early and let me know, I caught it early enough.
The attackers probably used some kind of dictionary attack to guess the password to the FTP accounts of my website and another website virtually hosted on my server and opened FTP access to both accounts and uploaded files. To the other website they uploaded a PHP backdoor (that allows access to the local MySQL server and to the local file system with the permissions of the web server) and rootkit.

פרוייקט KDE הודיע על שחרור גרסת בטא ראשונה של סביבת שולחן העבודה הבאה שלהם – גרסה 4. כמו כל פרויקט תוכנה שמכבד את עצמו, גם לגרסאת הבטא הראשונה של KDE 4 יש שם קוד: Cnuth.
זו בדיחה פנימית ואני אשאיר את זה בתור תרגיל לקורא להבין על מה.

19 years old Jhannet Sejas was arrested today for capturing 20 seconds of the new “Transformers” movie on her digital camcorder. [The Washington Post] [Daily Press] [ABC news].
The girl of course wasn’t aware that she was doing anything wrong, but according to a new copyright law passed in 2005, recording a motion picture in a theater is a crime regardless of the reason and use for the copy. I’m not aware of the specific details of this absurd law, so it might not actually prohibit this specific behavior (capturing a very small subset of the whole work), but in any case the specific law under which Jhannet Sejas will be tried on August 21 flies in the face of common copyright practices.
