הדיון על למה לינוקס לא יותר נפוץ מחלונות וכו’ הוא ותיק מאוד, ועם זקן כל כך ארוך שצריך להזהר איפה דורכים, אבל כפי שדייב גאטרידג’ מציין במאמר המצוין – “Windows is Free” שלו באתר Tokyo Linux User Group – אף אחד לא מדבר על הפיל.
זה מאמר די ארוך, אבל אם מעניין אותכם לינוקס ותוכנה חופשית אני ממליץ מאוד לשבת ולקרוא אותו מהתחלה ועד הסוף, ואני לא הולך לתקצר אותו פה, בעיקר בגלל שכאן זה פוסט הגיגים קצרצר.

ממש התרשמתי מהעיצוב של האתר של Template Toolkit (צילום מסך בהמשך). ויותר משהעיצוב ממש יפה, הוא עשוי ממש טוב וכולל כל מה שאפשר לרצות מאתר תואם סטנדרטים, וכמה דברים שלא ידעתי שאני רוצה :-).

אני לא מקורי במיוחד ;-). הפעם התקנתי אובונטו 7.10 בטא שלישית, הידועה גם כ”הגיבון הנועז, שבט 3″ – Gutsy Gibon Tribe 3. אובונטו החליפה את מערכת ההפעלה על המחשב של החברה שלי – הבטחתי לה כבר כמה זמן שאחליף לה את מערכת ההפעלה (מפדורה 7) וסוף סוף הגעתי לכך, אבל היא לא היתה נורא מרוצה מהקונספט של גרסת בטא. לא נורא: אחרי כמה מחלות ילדות קצרות¹ הוא יציב להפליא. כל הדברים שציפיתי שיעבדו פשוט עובדים, בלי צורך להגדיר שום דבר – אפילו לא לעבור דרך ממשק Next, Next, Finish (כמו בפדורה) או “כן אני מסכים שתעשו את הכל לבד” כמו באובונטו הקודם. חיבור רשת, כרטיס קול, קודקים מסחריים למולטימדיה (WMV ו-MP3), מנהלי התקן מסחרים לכרטיס המסך (nVidia² ) וכדומה.

1. היו הרבה התרסקויות בהתחלה עקב שינוי ממשק בינארי באחת החבילות, שלא סונכרן היטב אבל תוקן למחרת [↩]
2. כאן היה צריך להגדיר קצת: אובנטו עלה עם מנהל ההתקן החופשי והייתי צריך לפתוח את דיאלוג מנהלי ההתקן המסחריים וללחוץ על הכדור האדום כדי שיהיה ירוק. [↩]

Every now and then there’s a post/article/opinion-paper by someone lamenting about the demise of such and such cool device/computer/technology/service thingy. Which is cool – I’ve done my share of bemoaning too, and its definitely fun! (it goes well with the whole ranting thing that bloging is all about).

But its easy to lose perspective of the reality of the situation – more often then not, it wasn’t because the “bad guys” weren’t playing fair and messed up the market – to gain dominance with their inferior technology. A lot of time, the “superior” technology in question got trashed had it coming for and we’re all for the better because of that.

It can be argued that doing so is not the smartest thing ever, but I needed some new features available in Fedora 7 and not in CentOS 5, and I needed them on a remote server that I couldn’t just go to and re-install. So I figured both operating system are based on a previous version of Fedora (I think both are based on Fedora Core 6, but CentOS 5 may be based on Fedora Core 5), so it should be easy enough to upgrade from the older to the newer ?

הטלפון הראשי שלי היום הוא נוקיה 6600 שלא היה חדש כשקיבלתי אותו והיום הוא בן שנתיים וחצי, שזה גיל מכובד לכל הדעות לטלפון מודרני. כתוצאה מכך, הוא כבר לא משמש אותי באותה יעילות כמו בעבר. מעבר לכך שהממשק כבר די איטי והבטריה לא מחזיקה מעמד מספיק זמן (שני סממנים לטלפון ישן), הצרכים שלי גדלו ואני רוצה יותר: אני רוצה יותר דואר אלקטרוני (הודעה של 1 MB מכניעה לחלוטין את הטלפון) ואני רוצה תמיכה בקבצים מצורפים, אני רוצה יותר web בטלפון (ולא דרך האופרה מיני), ואני רוצה יותר קבצים ומוזיקה.

אין ברירה אלא לרכוש טלפון חדש, אבל איזה ?

Read the press release on Jonathan Schwartz’s blog (Sun’s CEO).

Its definitely a first time a major producer of microelectronics has released their designs to the public under a free license (free as in speech), and one can’t but wonder what are the ramifications of such a bold statement. One might argue that the SPARC design has lost to its competitors of the x86 type a long time ago and the Niagra models (The nickname for the UltraSPARC/OpenSPARC T1 and T2) are just the death throes of an dying product line. Granted, the T1 and more so the T2 are indeed of the top performing chips available right now – if not the top, but it can’t be argued that they met with little commercial success.

Are coming up with a cookbook. No – not a software cooking utility, or a recipe application or anything that runs on a computer but an actual cookbook with recipes for food in it.

The GNOME Cookbook will be published as a print on demand book, and although the license of the included recipes is still unclear, the stated goal of the project is to embody the spirit of the GNOME project, which to me means – open source code recipes.

ספציפית, יש ליורוקום את שרות הלקוחות הגרוע ביותר שנתקלתי בו כבר די הרבה זמן.

הסיפור התחיל לפני כמה שבועות כשהחלטתי שאני מעוניין לשדרג את הטלפון הממש ישן שלי (נוקיה 6600) ולהחליף אותו ב-N95 חדש. מכשיר מצוין לכל הדעות אבל בזמנו עוד לא ניתן היה להשיג אותו בארץ. לאחר מספר טלפונים לשרות הלקוחות, גם אורנג’¹ וגם יורוקום הבטיחו לי שיתקשרו אלי כשהטלפון יהיה זמין.

Ever since we got a laptop with Windows Vista at my company, I keep being amazed at how incredibly sucky Windows Vista is. Yes – the interface is pretty cool and much prettier then most anything out of the box¹. But the behavior and usability, especially those new access controls, is horrendous!

1. I much prefer the Mac OS-X out-of-the-box experience, but that is a matter of personal taste – its definitely not prettier, just cleaner. Linux based operating system can look as pretty as Windows Vista if not more, but by default all Linux distribution, including the new (and yet unreleased) Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon don’t look even close to the prettiness that is Vista (with the bells and whistles – which aren’t available in all versions) [↩]
