Another fine KDE feature

That I thought people should be aware of – everyone that has ever browsed the web more then a couple of times knows that links on pages are not always as simple as navigating to another page:

The worst offender is of course the “open in a new window” link which when you click on surprises you by springing open a new window (although the problem is lessened in modern browsers that open new tabs which is far less surprising and actually useful).

Poor Typography

While I’m using Linux as my main operating system for a long time and I haven’t used MS-Windows for any significant amount for several years now, unlike my previous work place, in my current work most of my colleagues are using MS-Windows on their desktops. Because of this, I’m exposed to a lot of MS-Windows during the day.

The visual difference between the two desktops is always jarring for me – especially when I’m writing documents, code or emails (and not when browsing web sites, which visually is a very similar experience on both platforms) I’m astounded by how text looks so much different, even when using the exact same fonts. Perhaps I’m just used to it – sitting in front of a Linux desktop most of the day – but I find the typography on the Linux desktop (notably GNOME in my case, KDE is slightly different) much more pleasing to the eye then what you find on the standard MS-Windows desktop, and its always slightly painful to go back and look at text on an MS-Windows computer.

Since I can’t leave well enough alone, I’ve set up a comparison between the two scenarios – so you can check for yourself and tell me if I’m just imagining things:

User interface hall of shame

Sometimes you encounter a software user interface that is so lame, you just can’t let it go. This is a very good example of such a case – MS-Project and the delete button.

By the way

Microsoft has released MS-Windows Vista to stores on Tuesday, amid global indifference, and as a co-worker of mine noted amusingly – at the exact 74 years anniversary of Adolf Hitler gaining control over Germany.

Another patent related article

Another Microsoft software patent fiasco had recently hit the fan with Microsoft trying to patent a new Visual Studio feature which was knowingly copied from a freely distributed, university developed, object oriented teaching software… and retracting it as soon as the patent application was made public.

Nothing new here (except the retraction – that’s new, but this case has prior art so obvious that a blind judge on sedatives would have kicked it out of the court with prejudice). But it got curious, so I looked up the individuals named in the patent application using Google’s patent search. Here are some interesting results:

Well, it happens from time to time, but still funny to watch even giants stumble.

Open source, the warning label

Yesterday I bought a new wireless router – the product currently available in Israel from Linksys’ successful WRT54G series is the WRT54GL, which again features Linux as the internal operating system for the device.

It was also nice to find this sticker on the box:
Open source label for the WRT54GL, close up
Which clearly advertises Linksys’ obligations under the licesnses for the free software they were using.

I hate it when they do that.

This is something which is funny and sad at the same time. Its not the first time I encountered this issue, which is that people who evangelize Linux (or basically any other product) don’t use it themselves. If you are going to be an evangelist, have the decency to practice what you preach.
