או כל דבר דומה – אני אפילו לא מבדיל בין הסוגים השונים, או יודע מה השמות שלהם (אני כן יודע שיש כל מיני סוגים של רעשים אלקטרוניים ויש להם שמות שונים – זו התקדמות 😉 ).

והקומיקס הזה של XKCD שראיתי היום מדגים את המחשבות שלי בנושא בצורה מדוייקת למדי (אז הייתי חייב לחלוק):

This is not really a script – more of a snippet. I don’t have a lot of spare time these days, so I can justify posting a snippet and calling it “script day” 😉 .

A lot of unix configuration files use the # sign to add comments to configuration files, and a lot of software comes with very well documented files – i.e. has lots of comments. So much that if you just want a quick glimpse at the configuration that is active (not commented out) its very difficult to wade through all the documentation.

Here’s a simple grep that will filter out all the junk and leave you with just the active configuration settings:

egrep -v '^(#|\s*$)' <config file>

and on the standard output you’d get only lines that are not commented out or empty.

Do note that some configuration files can also use ; as a comment character, but modifying the grep to support this is trivial.

כדי “לחגוג” את המאורע הנה שני מונים לשחרור של גרסות הלינוקס שאני הכי משתמש בהן היום (וספציפית בגרסאות העומדות לפני שחרור):

מנדריבה, שזו הפצה אחרת שאני מחבב – אם כי לא יצא לי להשתמש בה לאחרונה – כבר שיחררה גרסה אביבית.

עדכון [25.4]: אובונטו החדשה שוחררה, ובאיחור של רק יומיים ניסיתי להריץ שדרוג במחשב הביתי שמריץ עדיין 7.10 (לא מסובך – מנהל העדכונים כבר צריך להתחיל להציק לכם, תפעילו אותו ותלחצו על כפתור ה-upgrade למעלה. שדרוג של פדורה הולך להיות הרבה פחות נעים), וזה לא נראה שזה מתקדם לאן שהוא – השרתים של אובנטו בטח מפוצצים כי תהליך השדרוג לא מצליח להוריד אפילו את רשימות העדכונים, שלא לדבר על החבילות עצמן.

עדכון נוסף: הצלחתי להגיע לשלב העדכון של אובנטו בו מנהל העדכון מודיע מה הוא הולך לעשות וכמה זמן זה יקח. שימו לב לתמונה הבאה:

לפני כמה חודשים התקינו דואר ישראל בכל סניפיהם מערכת ממוחשבת ומשוכללת לניהול תורות – בכניסה לכל סניף דואר יש עמדת מחשב הכוללת מסך מגע המציג בצורה ויזואלית ומושכת עין את סוגי התורים הזמינים בסניף. בלחיצה אחת על המסך, המערכת מנפיקה ללקוח מספר תור. בתוך הסניף מותקנים מספר מסכי טלוויזיה שטוחים המציגים את המספרים שכרגע משורתים על ידי הפקידים בכל תור, ובנוסף פרטי מידע אחרים (כגון שערי מט”ח) ופרסומות לשרותים של חברת דואר ישראל. כשלקוח מסיים לקבל שרות, מערכת כריזה ממוחשבת מודיעה על המספר הבא בתור המתאים ומפנה את הלקוח לעמדה הפנויה. תענוג!

IETF’s RFC process has almost always been a good place to get a laugh, come April 1st – and this year is not an exception: I present to you RFC 5241 – Naming Rights in IETF Protocols which discusses (to some merit, one might say) the requirements and methods by which the IETF might lease protocol field names to commercial interests.

A few examples presented by the authors of the RFC include: Princess Cruise Lines Port Number, Sharpie Marker field and White & Day Mortuary Time-to-live. Additionally RFC 5241 scores bonus points by referring to RFC 3514 :-).

Determining whether RFC 5242 is an April Fool’s post is left as an exercise to the reader.

There’s been a lot of gripe, grief and mayhem on the web in the last few days regarding Apple’s bundling of the new Safari 3.1 release with updates to their iTunes software (that is installed on millions of MS-Windows computers thanks to the iPod).

This would have come as more of a surprise for me if I wouldn’t have been using Safari 3 on MS-Windows (although not as my main browser) for the last 6 month approximately.

I don’t remember the exact context that this came up (was probably something along the lines of “Google can answer any question”), but yesterday we had some friends over and the question arose, so a quick google got me to this page:

Except for linking to a very interesting article that actually tries to tackle the problem scientifically, John DuBois (the author of the above page) tackled the question more empirically by adding the question as part of the registration process for a new account on the service that he is running. Some of the responses are very amusing.
