Poor Typography
June 13th, 2007While I’m using Linux as my main operating system for a long time and I haven’t used MS-Windows for any significant amount for several years now, unlike my previous work place, in my current work most of my colleagues are using MS-Windows on their desktops. Because of this, I’m exposed to a lot of MS-Windows during the day.
The visual difference between the two desktops is always jarring for me – especially when I’m writing documents, code or emails (and not when browsing web sites, which visually is a very similar experience on both platforms) I’m astounded by how text looks so much different, even when using the exact same fonts. Perhaps I’m just used to it – sitting in front of a Linux desktop most of the day – but I find the typography on the Linux desktop (notably GNOME in my case, KDE is slightly different) much more pleasing to the eye then what you find on the standard MS-Windows desktop, and its always slightly painful to go back and look at text on an MS-Windows computer.
Since I can’t leave well enough alone, I’ve set up a comparison between the two scenarios – so you can check for yourself and tell me if I’m just imagining things:

Setting up DMZ with multiple static IPs on an office LAN using DD-WRT

This is the story of how I managed to setup a DD-WRT powered router for my office LAN, with multiple static IPs (from a DSL connection) on a DMZ. It was kind of trial and error because I couldn’t find a good reference on how to do such a thing (or in any way use static IPs without port mapping or DNAT) – so I decided to write one.

KDE נגד GNOME – מסכי תצורה
June 4th, 2007במלחמה בין שתי סביבות שולחן העבודה הפופולאריות ללינוקס, אני לא תופס צד (למרות מה שמני אולי יחשוב). נכון שכרגע שולחן העבודה ברירת המחדל שלי הוא GNOME, אבל הייתי משתמש KDE המון זמן וברגע ש-KDE4 יצא, אני מבטיח לכם שאחזור. בנוסף אני מאוד אוהב את יכולות התצורה של KDE ובכך שכמעט כל דבר אפשר להגדיר ולשנות.
ב-GNOME המצב שונה – יש מעט מאוד אפשרויות תצורה (לפחות מתוך הדיאלוגים הזמינים למשתמש הפשוט – אני לא רוצה לדבר על gconf), אבל לא על זה באתי לדבר היום, אלא על הגישה השונה מהותית של שתי המערכות לכפתור ה-OK בדיאלוגים אלו (או לחוסר שלו ב-GNOME).

May 30th, 2007אחת השאלות שמטרידות אנשים שצופים בסדרת הטלוויזיה מסע בן כוכבים (Star Trek) – לפחות אנשים מסוימים, טכניים מאוד – זה למה החלליות שם תמיד פוגשות אחת את השניה כשהן מיושרות על אותו מישור. כמה מחקרים קוסמולוגים חדשים מצביעים על סיבה אפשרית – יתכן שליקום יש כיוון מועדף:
עדכוני אתר
May 27th, 2007שינויים שהתרחשו באתר לאחרונה:
- הוספתי נגן מוזיקה בצד ימין במקום החלון הקופץ של last.fm – כך הוא נראה קצת יותר טוב, אבל זה אומר שמי שרוצה שהמוזיקה תמשיך לנגן חייב להשאר באתר.. <צחוק מרושע>מו-וואה-הא-הא-הא</צחוק מרושע>
- עדכנתי את התוכנה של גלריית התמונות ושיניתי גם את העיצוב. העיצוב החדש יותר חלק ונקי ואני מאוד מרוצה מזה (מבוסס על gallery2 siriux עם מעט שינויים כדי לגרום לבלוקים לצוף בצד שמאל – אני מעריך את הפשטות של העיצוב המקורי, אבל להרחיק את הכלים החשובים לתחתית העמוד לא מקובל עלי).
