Sourceforge to allow project managers to offer paid services
May 16th, 2007Something that has been mentioned around, but now is official: Sourceforge, a web site that offers free developer services (as in gratis) for free software (as in libre) and open source project, is coming out with a new feature: Sourceforge Marketplace – currently starting public beta – allows developers who host projects on sourceforge.net website to offer paid services to people who use their software, through sourceforge.net.
(the link talk about how this product is going to be as its an old article, and the actual launch was just announced in email to project managers and not yet on Sourceforge’s web site).
WordPress’s least used and most useful feature
May 12th, 2007One of the, or “the”, most useful and least used feature of wordpress (the software that powers this blog) is the ability to take an RSS feed (or an ATOM feed – whatever fits your fancy) of basically anything! For example, if you searched the blog for the word “blue”, you can take a feed from the results just by adding “/feed” at the end of the URL1 so that you’ll be notified whenever an article with the word “blue” in it is added.
To HTPC or not to HTPC
May 10th, 2007I have a small dilemma I’d like to share with you – and maybe get some feedback: I’m planning to buy a computer, as I currently don’t have a computer for myself at home (well – that’s not really true: I have about 6 of them, in various stages of assembly, but none of them is more recent then a Pentium 3 type and I really don’t have the time or the patience to start making something useful from all the parts). So I have set aside a budget for purchasing a computer in the next month or so. Its not that I really need one – I have one at work (not a laptop like in my previous job that I could carry it with me home – hence my need for a new one) and at home I usually leech one of Karen’s PCs – which she is mostly fine with (notice the “mostly” part – another reason I should get my own).

- לחתוך חצי בצל גדול לקוביות גסות ולאדות בסיר בינוני על אש קטנה
- למצוא במקפיא שקית ירקות קפואים “לקט נורמנדי”. לקחת חצי שקית (400 גרם) ולהפשיר במיקרו
- להרתיח מים בקומקום
- כשהמיים רותחים והבצל מאודה, למלא חצי מהסיר (עם הבצל) במים רותחים. להמליח קלות (ואני ממליץ להוסיף גם אבקת שום). להעביר את הסיר לאש גדולה ולוודא שרותח
- לזרוק פנימה את הירקות המופשרים (אין חובה שהם יהיו מופשרים עד הסוף)
- בשלב זה המהדרין יבחינו שאין בלקט נורמנדי תפוחי אדמה ויוסיפו לתוך הסיר שלושה תפו”א קטנים (או אחד גדול) חתוכים לקוביות של ס”מ. זה זמן טוב גם לתבל את המרק לפי הטעם (אני ממליץ לשים חוויאג’ למרק, אבל אני לא שם את זה בגלל שהחברה שלי רגישה לתבלינים מעניינים).
- כשהמרק רותח שוב, להעביר לאש נמוכה ולהמתין 10 דקות
- לאחר 10 דקות, להוסיף כמה חופנים של פסטה קצרה (קונקילי, פוזילי, ריגטוני, פנה, וכו’)
- כשהפסטה מתרככת (וכמעט מוכנה) להוסיף 4 כפות עגבניות מרוסקות, ולהמתין עוד כ-5 דקות
עכשיו המרק מוכן לאכילה, וזה לא צריך להיות הרבה אחרי 2:30 בלילה. אפשר להשאיר אותו על אש קטנה עוד קצת זמן עד שכל האורחים מגיעים, או לכבות את האש ולחמם שוב אחר כך.

January 30th, 2007Another Microsoft software patent fiasco had recently hit the fan with Microsoft trying to patent a new Visual Studio feature which was knowingly copied from a freely distributed, university developed, object oriented teaching software… and retracting it as soon as the patent application was made public.
Nothing new here (except the retraction – that’s new, but this case has prior art so obvious that a blind judge on sedatives would have kicked it out of the court with prejudice). But it got curious, so I looked up the individuals named in the patent application using Google’s patent search. Here are some interesting results:

January 29th, 2007אתמול קיבלתי דואר זבל. ז”א, לא קיבלתי אותו – מני ליבנה שעובד איתי קיבל אותו, אבל אחר כך ראיתי 30 עותקים של אותו דואר בתיבת דואר הזבל בשרת. כל זה לא היה סיפור מעניין במיוחד לולא זה היה דואר אלקטרוני מעט מוזר בתור דואר זבל – התוכן לא ניסה לפרסם מוסך לאאודי, שרות תמיכה למחשבים או בית ספר לשפות (חווית דואר הזבל הישראלית שונה מאוד מחווית דואר הזבל של דוברי האנגלית, אם כי אנחנו מקבלים גם הרבה מהזבל הרגיל של גלולות וכיו”ב ), אלא קמפיין פוליטי שמנסה להריץ את המשנה לראש הממשלה, והשר לפיתוח של משהו, שמעון פרס לנשיאות מדינת ישראל.
למה אסור להשתמש ב-GoDaddy בשביל לקנות דומיין
January 27th, 2007זה לא משהו חדש מבחינתי – מדי פעם אנשים פונים אלי בשאלה האם GoDaddy הוא מקום טוב לרשום דומיין (לפעמים זה יותר גרוע – אני יודע שיש בעיה אחרי שהדומיין כבר רשום) – ואני תמיד מנסה להוריד אותם מזה. נכון ש-GoDaddy הוא רשם המתחמים (domains) הגדול ביותר בעולם (בערך 4 מיליון שמות מתחם, אני חושב), מה שהופך אותם לסכנה כמעט גרועה כמו מיקרוסופט.
חברת אפל עם הלהיט הבא ?

לחברת אפל יש אירוע ציבורי כל שנה, בערך בתקופה הזאת, בשם Macworld שנערך בסן-פרנסיסקו. כל שנה סטיב ג’ובס – המנכ”ל הכל יכול של אפל – עולה לבמה, במה שזכה להקרא ה”keynote”, ומציג את החזון של אפל לשנה הבאה ואיזה מוצר חדש ומעניין אפל ינסו לדחוף השנה לקהל מכורי המק ואולי גם לנו. בד”כ זה לא משהו שישפיע על העולם מעבר לסקרנות שבה כל טכנולוג שמכבד את עצמו בוחן משהו חדש מבית אפל, אבל פעם בכמה שנים ג’ובס מוציא מהשרוול איזה שפן שמשנה את פני העולם כפי שאנחנו מכירים אותם. בפעם הקודמת זה היה ה-iPod של אפל שהשתלט לחלוטין על שוק נגני המדיה (הי – אפילו לאלעד יש אחד, וזה אומר המון 🙂 ).
השנה, ואני מדווח על זה באיחור של כמה ימים, אז כל חובבי הטכנולוגיה שכבר שמעו על זה מוזמנים לעבור הלאה, ג’ובס הציג טלפון סלולארי.
