All hands – man those browser download buttons!

Anyway, please head over to Mozilla to download Firefox 3 which was released a scant two hours ago. Also try to refresh the main page a couple of times – its fun 🙂 .

Here should also go a link to Spread Firefox’s world record page, but they seem to have crashed in the ongoing commotion. To cut a long story short, Mozilla are trying to break the world record for the most downloads in 24 hours of a single application (monitored and supervised by Guniess World Records). I did my share, what about you ?

Firefox 3 download day concluded with well over 8 million downloads. The exact figure is still not released as the Guiness World of Records people have to sign on it.

Looking at the local scale – downloads just in the middle east, Israel had tens of thousands of downloads, in the middle east only Iran and Turkey has more downloads. Interestingly enough, Iran has more then twice the amount of downloads as Russia, weird.

This is a notice of technical difficulties: I was doing some maintenance work on the blog – installing plugins and stuff, and I broke the comments so that people couldn’t send comments.

I’ve now fixed it so its ok to post comments, sorry about the mess.

Also – now when you comment, you can register yourself to receive notifications by email when anyone answers. This is much easier then having your RSS aggregator read the comments feed.

Again, sorry for the problems and keep those comments coming 🙂

This has been sitting in my Firefox session-saved tabs for a while now (I thought I’d do a “interesting links” post), so I decided to clean up my act and throw it out there.

Yahoo has this incredibly under-advertised feature where you can hit a URL on their site and it will send you to a completely random web site every time.

The URL is http://random.yahoo.com/bin/ryl, try it for some random harmless fun.

Well, probably not – I just wanted to put a sensationalist headline once 🙂

What I’m really annoyed about is that Google Maps have no information on Israel – not cities, roads, nothing – even Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv aren’t listed. At the time, I’ve put it down to Google having no information at all for the entire region and I thought that they will probably fix this in due course.

And they did – sorta, as you can see in the screenshot below:

While I’m on the subject of Firefox, Firefox 3 beta 3 is scheduled to be released soon, so I took the liberty of checking the Mozilla beta “splash page”¹ , and while last time I checked it was 404ed – now it shows something, but not what I expected. If you’d click the link after the beta 3 was released, then you’d get the real page and not what I saw, so here it is for posterity:

הייתי חייב לכתוב פוסט קצר כי קצת ירדתי על השוא”ש בטא 1 במאמר הקודם, אז התרשמות ראשונה:

• מסך הפתיחה ממש מגניב
• שורת הכתובות עכשיו הרבה יותר טובה מבבטא 1, ושם היא היתה שיפור לעומת מה שהיה קודם. עכשיו זה פשוט ממשק חיפוש נוח בהיסטוריה ובסימניות בצורה משולבת לחלוטין.
• לגבי כל הרטינות שלי על צריכת זכרון ויציבות: הבטות של השוא”ש הרבה יותר יציבות והרבה פחות צורכות זכרון מאשר גרסה 2
• רוב ההרחבות לשוא”ש, וחמור מזה – כל ההרחבות שאני ממש צריך כמו Firebug – עדיין לא עובדות
• כרגע – ולדעתי זה רק בגלל שאני משתמש בגרסאות של מוזילה וברגע שהפצות הלינוקס יתחילו להפיץ את השוא”ש החדש זה יסתדר – השוא”ש לא ממש אוהב לינוקס. ספציפית מוזילה זנחו את רוב האייקונים הפרטיים שלהם והתחילו להשתמש באלה של GTK לכל מה שרלוונטי, אבל מאיזו סיבה שלא ברורה לי הוא בוחר את האייקונים ברירת מחדל שהם האייקונים הישנים ולא טנגו כמו שהם התכוונו. זה נראה ממש רע. חמור מזה, כשפותחים קישור בשוא”ש מתוכנה חיצונית, החלון של השוא”ש קופץ לשולחן העבודה הנוכחי. זה ממש מעצבן וזכור לי היתה כזאת בעיה בעבר ונראה לי שהיא נפתרה בהפצות.

I’ve seen this article in the past, but it came up in my Google reader list for some reason, so I’ll blog about it.

One of the main problems people have with using Firefox is that its such a memory hog – it eats up a lot of memory and I’ve seen instances where after running for a few days it can consume more then 1 Gigabyte of memory and as a result becomes incredibly slow as the operating system has to keep swapping browser parts in and out of virtual memory just to change tabs. This of course slows down other applications. Mozilla developers, on the other hand, claim to keep a really tight ship and to test for and fix memory leaks. I’m not saying this is not the case, but the evidence for memory abuse are staggering.
